'The Provoked Wife' Design Project
Competition brief for the ‘Patterns for Performance’ prize by the Costume society. For this project I designed costumes for the show ‘The Provoked Wife’ by John Vanbrugh. I set the costumes in the 1690s/early 1700s, keeping mostly in line with the original play, written in 1697. The play is a comedy, so I chose a vibrant colour scheme to give a light-hearted feel. The colours also highlight the relationships between each character and reflects their personalities. I used patterns from ‘The Cut of Men’s Clothes’ by Norah Waugh and the ‘Patterns of Fashion’ books by Janet Arnold to help research silhouette.
